Abstract Human beings as social entities cannot solve their problems and provide their own needs without collaboration among themselves. Cooperation is a choice taken in order to fulfil their daily activities for obtaining a secure and sustained livelihood. Cooperation and collaboration are simple, efficient and helpful approaches rendering daily life much easier.

The development and organisation of cooperatives is the progression of cooperation from a natural behaviour into a structured organizational form with progressive laws and regulations. Nowadays, cooperatives are regarded as people oriented organisations which are active in social and economic perspectives in majority of the counties in the world (Ansari 1993; Smith 1985; Taleb 1998).

Agricultural cooperatives are a major component in the development of agribusiness and profit increase for farmers. The current study investigates several influential factors affecting farmers' profitability in their agricultural work. The study focused on the effect of age, education, area of cultivated land, house ownership, number of bathrooms, and membership in a cooperative, on the returns of farmers from the Northern Bekaa region.

In a sample of 200 farmers, primary data was collected through interviews in order to assess their socio economic status, as well as the contribution of agriculture and other factors on their income. A logarithmic transformation for the regression analysis was conducted.

Results indicated that education, area of cultivated land, number of bathrooms and cooperative membership were strong positive predictors of increase in farmers' total net returns. Age was found to be an additional fifth factor in influencing farmer's estimated returns. Implications of the results were discussed and policy recommendations and directions for future research were suggested.
