Abstract The present thesis is a study of the term Sahaba in Islamic history. The aim of this thesis is to examine the definition of this term and its origins in Islamic historical sources. The importance of this issue comes into view when it is studied in the context of Hadith transmission which is claimed to be accomplished by the Prophet's companions: the Sahaba. Thus, another relevant topic is tackled which is 'adalat al-sahaba as a main factor in the transmission of Hadith.

Chapter I examines some of the main problems concerning Arabic historiography, such as the written tradition versus oral transmission in the early Islamic period, and the early compilations of biographical literature, taking into consideration several arguments of modern scholars about these issues.

Chapter II tracks the origins of the term in language, the Qur'an, Hadith, and scholarship.

Chapter III depicts the major Muslim views on the Sahaba, focusing only on the two dominant camps in Islam: Sunnis and Shiites.
